Welcome to the Oxford Ethnographic Film Society's website!
The Oxford Ethnographic Film Society (OEFS) was founded in the year 2000 by Dr Alison Kahn while she was a post-graduate student of Anthropology at the University of Oxford. The aim of the society is to screen a variety of films that can be considered ethnographic and then to discuss and debate the topics and themes that arise. Invited filmmakers present their work, answer questions from the audience and take part in lively discussions. OEFS has participated in various film festivals, such as the Rome International Film Festival in 2001 and 2002 and the Royal Anthropological Institute's Ethnographic Film Festival in Oxford in 2005.
After seven years of operation, OEFS became dormant before the torch was picked up and carried on by then graduate student Frerk Froböse. Sponsored by the Oxford Academy of Documentary Film (OADF), the company Dr Alison Kahn had since founded, and supported by the kind staff at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, OEFS carries on this tradition today. Under the leadership of current Visual Anthropology graduate student Corey Boling, OEFS has joined forces with the Pitt Rivers Museum to bring you an exciting and dynamic programme for 2010.
